Course objectives
Students will be able to understand the basic compositional principles used in the French music of the 17th and 18 century.
Syllabus
  • Lecture includes selected chapters from the history of the French Baroque and early Classical music. Discussed will be mainly French Baroque opera, cantatas as well as creation, chamber music and oratorio and church work. The organic part of the lectures are short historickopolitické Arts and excursions. A) The period of the reign of King Louis XIV. and Louis XV. - Politics, science, culture, philosophy, society. B) French opera - typology of genres. French Overture and its penetration into Central Europe. Tragedy lyrique I J.-B. Lully - Atys, Alceste. M.-A. Charpentier - Medea. Comedie-Ballet: comparison of Lully's Le bourgheoise gentillhomme and Charpentierova La malade Imaginaire. Tragedy lyrique II. CamPro A., M. P. de Montéclair. Disputes on the primacy of French and Italian opera - Raguenet Abbe Le Cerf de Vieville. J. Ph. Rameau. Disputes buff, Pergolesi.J.-J. Rousseau - La Devin du Vilage, Memory.
