Course objectives
Climate and climatology. Climate definitions, climate system, climate cube, climate change, feed - back mechanisms in climate. Time series analysis in climatology. Periodicity and cyclicity, homogeneity, tests of the homogeneity, time series homogenizing, correlation analysis, harmonic analysis, power spectrum analysis, cross - spectral analysis, filtering, moving analysis methods. Instrumental meteorological data sets. Errors problems of measurements (air temperature, precipitation, sunshine duration), fluctuation of meteorological elements in Central Europe, contemporary global changes of climate, influence of climate - forming factors (solar activity, volcanic activity, ENSO, greenhouse effect). Historical data sets. Historical sources about weather and climate, written records and their quantitative interpretation, climate of the last millennium in Europe (Little Ice Age, Medieval Warm Period). Palaeoclimatic data sets. Sources of palaeoclimatic data and their evaluation, climate of Europe in warm historical periods (optimum of the Holocene, Eemian interglacial, optimum of the Pliocene). Climate scenarios. Global warming, scenarios based on palaeoclimatic reconstructions, instrumental scenarios, scenarios based on GCM estimates, problems, examples. Impacts of the global warming for agriculture, forestry, hydrology and water management, health and recreation, energy consumption. Strategies for reducing of the global warming.
