Course objectives
The course aims at familiarising students with the topics of development of mainly printed media covering the key countries in the Euro-American civilisation area (Great Britain, France, Germany, or USA) from the 16th century to the mid-20th century. At the end of the course, students will be able to explain the issues of hoarding and transmitting information and images, the process of press production, and media censorship and regulation, as well as the topics of printed press authors, their audience, and the issues of media effects and economic aspects associated with media (classifieds, advertising and distribution). Next to it, they will be able to characterize basic changes in the printed media products with the given space-time, noticing the development of their periodicity, circulation, content and form. Special attention will be paid to the issue of the rise of mass press in the course of the 19th century. The course allows students to explain the elements of the discussed issues, describe the progress in media development, interpret the causes of their development, as well as classify them into societal, political, economic and cultural contexts.
