Course objectives
This class renders an introductory explanation of the relationship between Japanese language and culture with a special reference to sociolinguistics as well as cultural studies. We first learn the basic notion in Japanese sociolinguistics such as gender differences, dialects as well as social class differences. Based on our understanding, we will examine how Japanese language is used in such materials in Japanese pop culture as Anime, SNS, Movies, and so forth. Through this class, students are expected to have a basic understanding of Japanese language and culture.
