Course objectives
At the end of the course, students should be able to use German verb forms in the appropriate context. They should be able to recall the most important irregular forms and to identify them in authentic language material. They should be able to relate active and passive constructions and to form one on the basis of the other. In the field of modality, students should be able to actively use German modals in their basic (deontic) meaning and to decode more special (epistemic) meanings, as they occur in texts. A further important outcome of the course is theoretical background knowledge on the organization of grammars. Students should become familiar with the essential terminology and be able to define the most important grammatical concepts; they should be able to use them to identify and classify the corresponding items in language material. Finally, they should be able to compare different accounts in the literature (e. g., different classifications of verbs) and assess their value for teaching German as a foreign language.
Syllabus
  • - finite and infinite verb forms,
  • - verb classification according to morphological criteria, verbal inflection classes,
  • - syntactic verb classification and morphological implications,
  • - semantic verb classification and implications for auxiliary selection,
  • - morphological, syntactic and semantic properties of German modals,
  • - periphrastic tenses,
  • - different descriptions of the German mood system,
  • - passive constructions and constructions with passive-like properties.

Assessment methods
The course finishes with a written exam covering the morphological lectures and seminars during the summer and the winter term (i.e. MOR1 and MOR2 as well as the according lectures). A minimum of 60 % is needed to pass the exam. For a revision, students are referred to the script (Geislerova) and the common intermediate grammars of German as a foreign language (e.g. Hering/Matussek/Perlmann-Balme). In addition, students are required to hand in a short paper (5 p.) reporting on their own research in the field of German morphology (see the folder “Course-Related Instructions” in the section “Study Materials” in the IS).
