Annotation: BrĂm Jan, Phonetics and phonology in selected textbooks of German language for upper elementary schools: degree work, Brno, MU 2008. This degree work investigates three sets of German-language teaching materials for German as a second foreign language in upper elementary schools in the Czech Republic from phonetic point of view. All teaching materials are representative of the A1 level. The first set is called "Heute haben wir Deutsch 1", the second "Wir 1", and the third, "Genial". Each set consists of a textbook, a workbook and either a tape or a CD. This degree work ascertains the number of explicitly marked pronunciation exercises. It also deals with ten selected phonetic phenomena that cause pronunciation problems to Czech native speakers. It judges, subjectively, the methodical manuals of each set. This degree work features basic information about the number of pronunciation exercises in the investigated materials. It is therefore concerned with the position of phonetics in contemporary publications. This work also tries to emphasize the importance of phonetics as one of the rudimentary linguistic disciplines. It stresses the significance of correct pronunciation practice in German language teaching.
