The main topic of my thesis is urban district Subura in the time of Roman Republic and Early Roman Empire. Subura was well-known as a centre of prostitution and night life. Thesis is divided according to the topics into four parts. First part is dedicated to sources, this means to references about this district in Latin literature. Second part handles about topography, ergo localization of the district and theories of its origin. Third part deals with inhabitants of Subura, who in most cases were small craftsmen and tradesmen. Third part also contains information about their life conditions. Forth part is whole dedicated to prostitution and problems connected with it. There are two maps of Subura in terms of Rome and a picture of present state of one of their parts in supplements. Subura was known mainly thanks to works of poets and satirists. It belonged to poorer districts, although houses of noblemen were situated there. Its origin is still obscure, as well the etymology of its name isnt sure so far.
