Course objectives
Degree programme: Archaeology Course: Petrography for Archaeologists Level: First cycle of the five-year Mgr. programme Language of instruction: Czech Teaching: 2 hours lecture per week Duration: 1 semester Credits: A2 Assessment: Test, oral examination Course description: An introduction into the basic mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical methods as currently applied in archaeology, introduction to the primary practical methods for determining stone materials used in prehistory. Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the problematics. Definition of petroarchaeology. Collections of comparative lithic raw materials - lithothecas.
  • 2. Used methods: archaeological, geological, mineralogical, petrographical, others.
  • 3. Survey of igneous rocks.
  • 4. Survey of sedimentary rocks.
  • 5. Survey of metamorphic rocks.
  • 6. Raw materials of chipped artefacts in Central Europe.
  • 7. Raw materials of polished artefacts in Central Europe.
  • 8. Raw materials of other artefacts and of colouring matters.
  • 9. Prehistoric mining of lithic raw materials.
  • 10. Study of rock specimens.
Assessment methods
Requirements for the final test: - knowledge of basic natural-science methods used in archaeology, their possibilities of application;
- knowledge of classification principles for magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks; - determination of 30 samples of the most important rocks used for chipped, polished and other lithic artefacts.
