Course objectives
The course focus on sociology as a science concerned with structure and dynamic developement of modern society as well as with the social structure and the developement itself. The main course frame is based on the discipline of economic sociology.
The course is structured in according to three main goals:
1. Introduce students to sociology as a science that deals with modern (industrial) society. Students will get a chance to underestand the relationship between sociological and economical perspective and they can adopt basic sociological concepts for description of social structure.
(2)- Get a basic orientation in social developement and social structure. Students will be introduced to basic sociological concepts which are relevant for underestandig the function of complex market societies. The lectures will also include concepts of social organization and institutions, culture and symbolic comunication, social stratification and inequality and transition to post-industrial society. We will emphasize the ability of students to see market life from broader frame of reference.
(3) – To introduce to the main methodological procedures of the sociological research. Students who attend a daily program, will in addition get a chance to experiment the elementary application of the basic research procedures.

  • 2. The founding of sociology.
  • 3. Main sociological paradigms and methodological procedures.
  • 4. Culture as a way of solving problems.
  • 5. Social stratification.
  • 6.Social organization.
  • 7. Sociological perspective on chosen issues of contemporary czech society.
  • 8. Contemporary global trends and its consequences.
  • Lectures are divded into two blocks, each of them will last four hours (1st block = themes 1-4, 2nd block = themes 5-8

Assessment methods
The prerequisites of the course are:
1. Developing of an essay, so called POT (submission is in DSO)
2. Completion of a examination paper (minimum recquired score is 60%)
Important information! If student commits a prohibited act, such as usage of various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the exam or any other cheating, teacher is allowed to interrupt an exam and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF according to the seriousness of the offence. Mentioned procedure relates to all the activities that are included to the final evaluation of the course (seminar work, essays, tests etc.).
