In the subject a knowledge of human anatomy and physiology is supposed, first of all a knowledge of exercise physiology.

Course objectives
The subject is focused on aeducation in field of human physiological stress tests.
Aims fo the subject - to acquire knowledge and ability at next fields:
1. Choice and methodology of tests for the diagnostics of physiological reaction and adaptation to physical loading, and diagnostics of ability to physical performance.
2. Analysis and interpretation of the test results, and its using in planning of physical activity, sport training etc.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able
1. to aware relations between the physical performance and human body loading (energy metabolism, circulation, respiration, thermoregulation etc.);
2. to enumerate and describe sources of the human loading for the physiological stress diagnoistics;
3. to recognize advantages and disadvantages of the different testing modes – in and out of a laboratory, as well as of different ergometers;
4. to enumerate and describe stress tests and indicators of the ability of the energy metabolism (system AT-CP, anaerobic glycolysis and aerobic glycolysis and lipolysis);
5. to enumerate and describe modes of a monitoring and assessment of a energy expenditure during human physical activities;
6. to enumerate safety conditions of the stress tests (reasons of no-execution and reasons of interruption of the tests);
7. to choose valid stress tests for diagnostics of the human reaction and adaptation to the physical loading, for right management of the exrcise or sport training;
8. to interpret results of the stress tests and to propose its use at the management of the exercise and sport training.
Syllabus
  • 1. Purposes of the stress tests. Choosing of the suitable stress test. Feature of the stets.
  • 2. Overview of the stress sources. Physical loading by movement, resistence, position; load volume, intensity, duration, in and out of the laboratory. Ergometers.
  • 3. Safety conditions of the tests. Healthy contraindications of the tests. Safety monitoring the reaction of people to loading. Reasons for the interruption of the tests. Specific approaches of the testing of children and seniors.
  • 4. Subjective and objective parameters od the reaction to load: load sensation, respiratory, carculatory, metabolic (biochemic).
  • 5. Tests and indicators of the anaerobic ATP-CP system: Margaria – Kalamen sprint test on stairs. Jump ergometry. Wingate test (maximal and average power, work, fatigue index).
  • 6. Tests and indicators of the anaerobic – glykolytic system: Spiroergometry (maximal oxygen debt, maximal oxygen deficit).
  • 7. Dynamometry on bicycle ergometers and bicycles – measuring of forces on pedals.
  • 8. Tests and indicators of the aerobic system I: Spiroergometry - maximal minute oxygen intake, oxygen half-time, pulse oxygen.
  • 9. Tests and indicators of the aerobic system II: Ergometries (W170, W150, W130), Cooper 12 min test, Harvard and YMCA step-tests, Ruffier test, Two km walking test.
  • 10. Pulse and muscle oxymetry.
  • 11. Tests and indicators of the aerobic system III: Anaerobic threshold - definition, meaning and ways of determination. Lactate threshold, ventilátory threshold.
  • 12. Assessment of energy expenditury during human movement (indïrect calorimetry, accelerometry, monitoring and tables of energy demands). Energetic economy of the human movement (running).
  • 13. Tests of complete tiredness/exhaustion – analysis of heart rate variability, biochemical a imunological indicators.
  • 14. Test of diving reflex.
  • 15. Stress tests of choosen patients (diabetics, astmatics, cardiacs, hypertonics)

Theoretical lectures.
Practical seminars: demonstration of the tests in laboratory and gym.
Assessment methods
1. attendance (one absence is permitted)
2. Creation of the seminar work (presentation by PowerPoint or Word) and its defence.
The seminar works will be focused on chosen test for certain persons (athletes or patients) for management their physical activity, including interpretation of test results.
