Course objectives
The course is intended as a practical supplement to course ENSn4444 - Economics for Environmentalists. Students can take this course in parallell with the course ENSn4444. It is closely linked to individual lectures in the ENSn4444 course and always applies a particular topic from ENSn4444 in practice. This is elaborated in the course content below. The aim of the course is the enabling of a deeper understanding and reflection of topics introduced in ENSn4444 via practical excercises, activities and discussions.
Learning outcomes
Students who take this course:
will be able to lead a more salient interdisciplinary dialogue with economists of different denominations,
due to gained practical skills will be able to better understand economic thinking and practice a reflect it critically from an environmental perspective,
will have gained practical experience with selected economic calcuations and project evaluation methods,
will strengthen their abilites of discussion, listening and critical thinking and their experience with interactive learning.
Syllabus
  • The course content is closely linked to the content of course ENSn4444. The outline below may therefore change slightly.
  • 1.Mutual acquaintance and acquaintace with course. Classroom experiment:prisoners´ dilemma and convergence to co-operative solutions
  • 2.Epistemological and ontological assumptions of economic theory. Activity: critical reading of selected texts
  • 3. Supply and demand. Classroom experiment: calculation of supply and demand according to microeconomic textbooks
  • 4.General equilibrium models. Practical application: Transatlantic trade and investment partnership (TTIP) and the study on which it is based - structured discussion about the study that legitimises TTIP
  • 5.Economic analyses of projects. Calculation of cost-benefit analysis and its critical reflection
  • 6.Finance and banking. Simulation game, focused on practical functioning of the banking system and its risks, discussion, short films
  • 7.Indicators of prosperity. Activity: Inclusive Wealth Index - work with texts (critical reading)
  • 8. Economic growth from the perspective of the firm: Simulation game: Share company or co-operative?
  • 9.Distribution of income and inequality: Classroom experiment simulating the reasons and implications of inequality
  • 10.Nature and ownership: Activity on the topic of ownership, commons and deforestation
  • 11.The commons: Simulation game Poochanari: On the privatization of the commons in Kerala (India)
  • 12. Structured discussion about the film: "Local and global: the importance of being close",
  • 13. Debate with invited guest.

Teaching methods
Structured discussions, classroom experiments, films with discussion, simulation games. The course will be based on practical activities and discussions. The course content is closely linked to course ENSn4444 and serves as its practical seminar.
Assessment methods
Successful completion of the course will require active and complete attendance during at least nine of the sessions.
