Course objectives
The aim of this course, which is taught on Bachelor’s level, is to give a general overview of the historical development of the women’s movement and feminism – mainly from a topical point of view. The course concentrates on examples from the Czech as well as the Anglo-American context (because of its importance for the development of today’s feminist and gender discourse). It is divided into three topical areas, dealing with the first and the second wave of feminism as well as the current Czech context. The first area presents the main topics of the women’s movement’s first wave, also including basic approaches of women’s history as well as examples of women thinkers, who were active before the women’s movement formed as a social movement, however constituted a kind of vanguard for this later movement. The course moves on dealing with the context, forms and central topics of the second wave, mainly of the English as well as Western European women’s movements. The final topical area presents the developments in the Czech context after 1989. After successfully completing the course, students will have a basic knowledge of feminism and the women’s movement and their central topics as it developed in the Anglo-American as well as European context as well as of key personalities and works that influenced this development.
