Course objectives
Aim of the course is to make students familiar with basic of artetherapy, so they can use their knowledge about development factors and symbolic structures in artistic expression to understand formal and content aspects in artetherapy. This is realized through: 1. personal experience with artistic expression in different ways 2. informing about theoretical approaches in the domain 3. analysis of illustrative casuistics with childrens and adults, including psychopatology aspects of artistic impression 4. study of professional literature and experiences with own artistic expression The course self-experienced aimed, with autobiographically interpretative artistic expression in atelier. This includes practical work, like collages and watercolors, and students can compare similarities in their work and their own lifestories thereafter. One integral part in practising artetherapy is to be familiar with development stages of child artistic expression. This is approached from different perspectives (health, social and pedagogical). In the course we will touch psychopathological phenomena of artistic expression. Several kinds of imagination techniques are included (relaxation, family and task oriented).
Syllabus
  • Topics include: 1. intensive course, theory: definition of the subject, it's possibilities and aims, and different schools (S. Freud, C. G. Jung) in context of psychotherapy. Research in artetherapy. Techniques: themed watercolor and it's using in artetherapy. Props needed: watercolors, thick brush, A3 drawing. 2. intensive course, theory: developmental stages of child drawing, casuistics. Projective methods in psychodiagnostics. Meaning, construction and communication aspects of artistic expression in artetherapy, role of imagination. Techniques: collage creation, possibilities, limits and risks of intepretation process. Props needed: watercolors, brush, quarters of paper, shoe box, few magazines, scissors, glue. 3. intensive course, theory: Psychological symbols and metaphors in artetherapy, style and communication aspects, psychopathology. Colors in artetherapy. Techniques: action watercolor and it's use. Themed work with self-identity and family topics. Presentation and analysis of one's own artistic artefacts. Props needed: watercolors, papers, pins, color inks, cloth, old newspaper, natural charcoal, soft plastic eraser

Assessment methods
Completion of a course is credit, because of which you need to choose and complete one from following tasks: 1)) choose 5 pieces alltogether, including both collages (My family, Sleeping beauty, Eden, Cold collage, A letter to father, A letter to mother) and watercolors (Sleeping beauty, Eden, Mermaid, My childhood country, Ice queen, Me, Father or mother and my partner. Then you have to write interpretation analysis of this artwork, in scope of 4 pages, including formal, procedural, and content aspects. This should be presented on final intensive course. 2)) Create 5 artworks like described above, and then find historical piece of art which formally resembles one of them. Then put this historical artwork to it's cultural context, and artists life context. Perhaps you can find similarities in topics and style of yours and the other artist. The scope is 4 pages again, and you have to present it on final intensive course. 3)) Write essay or review from professional artetherapy literature, and please let me know what topic you choosed in advance (scope 5 pages) 4)) Translation of foreign language artetherapy text, please let me know what topic you choosed in advance (scope 6 pages)
