Course objectives
The news report photography is not a mere description of the given situation, but above all, it defines the essence of the event via photographic means. Understanding the essence, a professional approach to creating reports and their processing and reviewing in the media is the subject matter of the course entitled the Introduction to the journalistic photography, as well as using the acquired skills in practice. The course students are expected to produce their own photographs to be subsequently defended within a discussion with the teacher.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction (introductory discussion – presenting the system of work in the course and the topics of practical exercises); 2.Photographic technique – handling and service. The camera, its functions and composition. Types of photographic devices. Photographic accessories and their use. Practical demonstration. 3. Theme and composition of a shot. Basics of the picture composition and the theme depending on the individual types of processed photographic reports. Samples of photographs (practical exercise). 4. Classical news report photography. Creating classical news report photographs, differences in themes for individual media – agencies, newspapers, magazines, and Internet media. Samples of classical news report photographs (practical exercise). 5. Documentary photographs. Creating documentary photographs and their use in media. Samples of documentary photographs (practical exercise); 6. Tabloid photographs. The role, themes and processing tabloid photographs. Their differences in comparison with other types of news report photographs. Samples of tabloid photographs (practical exercise); 7. Photographic series. Intentions when preparing a photographic report in the form of a series and its use in media, magazines and book production. Samples of photographic series (practical exercise). 8. Portrait. Preparing a portrait in the news report photography with respect to the atmosphere, capturing the moment, situation and the portrayed person's expression. Samples of portrait photographs (practical exercise). 9. Photographs from crisis situations and areas. The extraordinariness of the moment, non-standard approaches to obtaining information and making photographic reports with respect to the dangerous environment. Samples of photographs taken in conflict situations. 10. Ethics of journalism. Code of ethics and the approach to making photographic reports. 11. Processing a photograph. Essentials of processing digital photographs on a PC, working with the Adobe Photoshop software, and the ways of sending them out to subscribers. 12. Art in news report photography – competitions. Taking and selecting photographs designed for competitions and their assessment.

Assessment methods
Lecture (presenting the theory of photography in journalism) and seminar (practical exercises). Credit: The students are obliged to submit all the practical exercises prepared during the semester. The assignments are to be assessed with the help of the classical scale 1 – 5, failure to submit the assignments means that they will be marked as insufficient (5). In order to be awarded the credit, students must achieve the attendance level of approximately 80% (10 out of 12 lectures). Consultations about the assignment will be individual and by appointment. It is the active participation and work in the course of the whole semester that will be an important part of the assessment and the credit will result from a complex assessment of every individual student.
