Course objectives
The course introduces to the topic of new (digital) media and to the way these media are assessed by social sciences and humanities. The course aims to overview the basic conceptual and theoretical apparatus, selected topics addressed by new media studies, and technological and textual specifics of new media. The course focuses on conceptual apparatus including the concepts of digitization, hypertextuality, remediation and convergence, virtuality and cybertext, and on the role of new media (and, specifically, of social and mobile media) in social interactions and in the current transformation of private, public and political sphere. The course includes information on basic technological and historical facts linked with new, digital media.
Learning outcomes
Students gain knowledge of the basic concepts and theories applied in the field of new media research and theory; students gain competences necessary for a critical assessment of the social and cultural role of new media; students gain knowledge of the basic literature conditioning further theory based work in new media studies.

  • 1. Introductory lecture. 2. New media studies – a meta-field of research and theory. 3. Digital media – technological specifics of new media. 4. Between text and technology – codes and protocols. 5. New media textuality I: Cybertext and virtuality. 6. New media textuality II: Theory and history of hypertext. 7. Technological and textual interactivity. 8. Convergence and remediation. 9. New media and spatio-temporal transformation of everyday life. 10. New media and transformation of media audiences. 11. New media and political and public space. 12. History of new media. 13. Concluding lecture, consultations regarding final exam.
