Course objectives
The course assists students in the task of preparing a research proposal for their original research. The students then should be able to develop and precede other research projects. During the course students create and present their research proposals and comment on other students' work. The course closes with a public presentation of the dissertation plan and its defence. The course consists of three seminars and involves continuous study of the literature and ongoing work on a research project. The defense will be before a committee consisting of the instructor of this course, your advisor, and an assigned reviewer from the department. You will receive the reviewers' reports a few days before the defense. The defense is designed as a discussion.  The course has to be taken in the 3rd semester at the latest.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is able to explain the differences between the various methodological procedures of the social sciences, discuss the individual (often interrelated) steps of sociolgoical research, argue for the chosen method, and justify the use of specific steps and techniques.
