Course objectives
The course deals with the issue of the military in the Czech lands within the Habsburg multiethnic and multinational empire through both world conflicts to the post-war era, ending with the collapse of the federation in 1992. The main objective of the course is to map the basic trends in the historical development of the Czech military in a pan-European context, its important actors and the impact of the policies of the then strongest powers with regard to the division of spheres of influence. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand the development in this field from the 17th century to the end of the 20th century in an international context, outline the main milestones of political and military history, interpret the main historical events in the period and use the acquired knowledge to argue at an expert level.

Deepening knowledge of European and world history with emphasis on the development of the military from the 17th century to 1992 with its global overlap.

  • 1) Introduction to the subject, description of appropriate literature. Introduction to the study of military science in the Czech lands 2) In the service of the Habsburgs from the 17th to the 18th century – Albrecht of Valdštejn, Josef Václav of Lichtenstein 3) In the service of the Habsburgs in the 19th century – František Jirčík, Josef Václav Radecký of Radče 4) Czechs during the First World War – service in the Austro-Hungarian army x legionary anabasis 5) The First Republican Army, conflicts with Poland and Hungary and further development until the 1930s 6) The story of the 1936 National Defence Act – the struggle for the survival of the Republic 7) The Fateful Eight - 1938, consequences for the army and society 8) Czechoslovak foreign resistance during the Second World War 9) Czechoslovak domestic resistance during World War II 10) Czechoslovak Army in the fight against the UPA 1945-1947 11) The Fateful Eight - 1948, consequences for the army and society 12) The Fateful Eight - 1968, consequences for the army and society 13) The Czechoslovak Army from November 1989 to the collapse of the federation
