Course objectives
At the end of the course student should be able to:
- name basic phenomena from the area of sound perception and sonic environment
- explain mechanism of the influence sound has on psyche
- perceive sonic environment more sensitively

  • 1. Sound symbolism, visual and auditory culture, specificity of sound perception

  • 3. Perception of complex sonic environment (auditory scene analysis)

  • 5. The concept of noise, meaning of noise and silence
  • 6. Noise effects, noise annoyance
  • 7. The soundscape concept
  • 8. Newer conceptions of soundscape
  • 9. Ear-cleaning and soundmaking
  • 10. Noise in music, music as noise, soundscape composition

Teaching methods
Lectures, practical demonstrations of sound phenomena, experiential exercises, group project (prepairing a guide for soundwalk).
Assessment methods
Presence on lectures and seminars is required. Evaluation will be based on group projects.
