Course objectives
The course focuses on asylum and immigration law and on practical aspects of this field of law. The theory in the course is covered by a separate course Legal clinic, theory preparation which the students of the clinic are supposed to participate in. There is a practical exercise on every seminar (see the course syllabus). After the first three lessons students practice in an NGO and at the office of Ombudsman. Within the practice students also visit asylum centres and detention centres. In the clinic lessons students may exercise some aspects of legal counselling with feedback from lawyers practicing migration and refugee law and practice the knowledge in an NGO. In the second semester students may provide counselling to individual clients under expert supervision. The course is interlinked with the Asylum and migration law, during which theory in these fields is provided, in the lessons of the clinic there is place to try certain aspects of legal counseling with feedback from lawyers practicing law. Later on, there is a possibility to apply the knowledge during practice in a non-governmental organization. In the first half-year students do not treat clients of the NGO in person but they already take part and prepare certain legal documents, during the second half-year they deal with a case-study from the NGO and work on a real case for a specific client under the supervison of the NGO legal counsellor. The students have the possibility to find out what the work of a lawyer in an NGO is like, how law can assist a specific group of persons for whom often the NGO is the only source of legal counselling. The value added compared to other work in practice consists in the time dedicated to specific preparation in theory and the time dedicated to preparation for work with clients.
