Course objectives
The course is an introduction to the study of civil law as general private law. Its aim is to equip students with the ability to orientate themselves in the structure of private law and knowledge of the general part of civil law, which is necessary for further study of civil law as well as for understanding other private law disciplines. In particular, emphasis is placed on the issues of juridical acts, time, agency, and things in the legal sense as topics whose knowledge is necessary for understanding contracting and commercial relationships, which students will address in subsequent courses. The course also includes an overview of absolute property rights, offering a minimal orientation in these areas.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student:
- understands the difference between private and public law, understands the place of civil law in the private law system and knows the internal structure of civil law;
- knows the sources of civil law and can navigate the first and third parts of the Civil Code when solving legal problems;
- understands the content of the basic principles of civil law and their relevance to the application of civil law;
- understands the basic concepts relating to the status of private law persons (legal personality, legal capacity, tort capacity) and can describe their creation, termination and limitation;
- understands the concept of a juridical act, can distinguish it from other legal facts, can describe and apply the basic methods of interpretation of juridical acts, understands the differences between the various types of defects of a juridical act and can identify in which cases a juridical act is affected by such defects;
- understands the nature of direct representation and can distinguish between its types;
- understands the rules for calculating time in  law and the difference between limitation, prescription and extinction of a right by lapse of time;
- can explain the concept of a thing in the legal sense, the parts of a thing and accessories and understands the nature of the basic typologies of things, in particular the difference between tangible and intangible things and movable and immovable things;
- understands the system of absolute property rights and the general characteristics of such rights (erga omnes effects, numerus clausus, etc.);
- can describe the content of ownership and the mechanism of its protection and the basic nature of co-ownership relations;
- can interpret the prerequisites of succession and distinguish the basic features of the various titles of succession.

Teaching methods
Instruction will be carried out:
- by frontal teaching method with the personal participation of the student in the faculty building, when an initial mandatory consultation will take place, including the definition of the issues and systematics, key concepts and institutes, assignment of the end of the course.
- synchronously through three continuous mandatory group consultations implemented in the MS Teams environment, methods implemented (to be selected according to reality) will be: group and cooperative learning, critical thinking, project-based learning, problem solving from practice, brainstorming, emphasis will be on providing feedback, not frontal teaching.
- in asynchronous form (individual guided self-study) from the provided materials in the IS information system and/or textbooks (study texts, video, podcasts, audio-visual presentations and other interactive materials).
Mutual contact and communication between students will be possible at the first consultation held at the faculty and further through the subject team in the MS Teams application.
Assessment methods
During the teaching period, students take 3 tests implemented through the university information system, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for admission to the examination.
The course is completed by a combined examination consisting of a written and an oral part.
