Course objectives
The aim of the course is to teach students to understand and optically describe the process of accommodation of the eye, and to derive optimal parameters of spectacle lenses for correction of spherical refractive errors of eye, its astigmatism and presbyopia.
Learning outcomes
On completing the course, student will:
- understand the optical nature of the eye accommodation, the basics and correction of presbyopia
- be able to calculate and recalculate the design and optical parameters of spectacle lenses on the basis of given correction value
- understand the fundamentals and the optical method of optimizing the values of peripheral astigmatism and the field curvature of spectacle lenses
- understand the prismatic effect of prism and lens, understand the optical design of bifocal and multifocal spectacle lenses, the method of determining intervals of sharp vision
- understand the optical basis of the use of aspherical surfaces
- understand the method of correction of axial (eye) astigmatism and how to recalculate the correction
Syllabus
  • 1. Accomodation (basic concepts, mechanism of accommodation, Purkynie imagess, change of Gullstrand's eye parameters during accommodation, accommodation measurement, dependence on age: Duane's graph, optical analysis of the accommodation process: Graeff factor, near point for the corrected ammetropic eye)
  • 2. Presbyopia and its correction (nature of the defect, technical possibilities of correction, correction for the emetropic eye, choice of addition, correction for the ametropic eye, intervals of sharp vision)
  • 3. Spectacle lenses (basic forms of lenses with spherical surfaces, calculation of powers and radii of surfaces based on specified lens parameters)
  • 4. The spectacle lens aberrations (basic overview, field curvature, Petzval-Coddington condition, effect of field curvature at eye rotation, tangential and sagittal plane, peripheral astigmatism, its correction: condition of zero peripheral astigmatism, Tscherning's ellipse, point-focus lenses, correction for thick lenses, other philosophies of lens design, modern designs, aspherical surfaces, optical properties of materials for spectacle lenses)
  • 5. Bifocal and multifocal lenses (prismatic effect of optical prism and lens, effect of lens decentration, bifocal lenses, requirements for their implementation, elimination of image jump on the interface, sharp vision intervals, trifocal lenses, multifocal lenses: lenses with progressive addition)
  • 6. Eye astigmatism and its correction (etiology and classification of astigmatism, correction of eye astigmatism, cylindrical and toric spectacle lenses, principles of recalculation of astigmatic combinations)
