Course objectives
Intensive care is an area of health care that brings very specific risks of infection transmission. On the one hand, there are high demands on healthcare professionals, on their concentration and knowledge, on the other hand, there is a high susceptibility of critically ill patients to infections. The very essence of intensive care medicine with the need to achieve the effect of treatment in the shortest possible time requires much more invasive procedures than in standard care, and thus a higher risk for patients with impaired natural barriers in their body. At the same time, it is necessary to perceive an increased risk of occupational diseases. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the epidemiological risks in the provision of intensive health care, with specific requirements for ensuring anti-epidemic measures given by legislation, and with the possibilities of prevention of transmission of infections associated with health care and occupational diseases.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- understand and explain the process of disease transmission and factors influencing the transmission of infections in the provision of health care to critically ill patients.
- develop adequate and effective anti-epidemic measures to ensure outbreaks.
- implement preventive procedures to prevent the occurrence of infections associated with health care and occupational diseases.
- interpret laboratory and clinical findings in relation to the risk of infection transmission.
- understand the importance of active immunization in the prevention of the transmission of infections, including occupational infections.
