Syllabus
  • General safety measures. Volumetric ware, preparation of solutions.
  • Measuring pH values of solutions.
  • Construction of titration curves. Alkalimetry. Acidimetry.
  • Preparation of phosphate buffers. Titration of buffers, buffer capacity.
  • Selected ionic reactions, principle of atomic spectrometry.
  • Ions in tap water: contents of nitrates, nitrites, ammonium, calcium and magnesium ions.
  • Alcohols, phenols, and carbonyl compounds: structures and reactions.
  • Carboxylic acids, amines, and amides: general properties and reactions, derivatives, urea.
  • Adsorption chromatography of azo dyes (TLC). Column chromatography of carotenoids. Determination of theophylline concn. (HPLC).
  • Structures of monosaccharides. Reducing properties of sugars. Reactions of saccharides with acids. Reducing effects of L-ascorbate.
  • Lipids and steroids: structures, solubility and emulsification, soap, detection of unsaturated fatty acids, detection of cholesterol.
  • Amino acids and proteins: ionization and isoelectric point, solubility and precipitation, colour reactions.
  • Spectrophotometry: calibration solutions, absorption spectrum of Fe(III)-salicylate, determination of salicylate concentration.
