Course objectives
The main objective of the course is transfer the knowledges about media to students (especially to future teachers of pupils whose mother tongue is not Czech). This course should develop the skills that will help improve media literacy and critical reflection of media images, texts and messages that are produced by mass media. Another aim of this subject is to encourage the interest in the study of media and gain basic knowledge of the theory of media education. The subject aims to show how the media work, how the media messages are produced and how the media influnce one´s life.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the media. Literature, explaination of basic concepts. 2. Media education and its application in teaching the Czech language and literature for pupils whose mother tongue is not Czech. 3.-4. Mass media. The influence of media on audience (children and television). 5. Production of media messages. 6. Media and news. Genres of news. 7. Fiction in the media. Journalistic genres. 8.-9. Media and marketing. Media and advertising. 10.-11. Media and entertainment. Reality show as influential genre of television entertainment. 12. Regulation and self-regulation of the media.

Teaching methods
Type of teaching: seminar. Lecture parts, discussion, comments of specialized literature given to reading.
Assessment methods
Preparing one unit of teaching media education at the primary school and its presentation at the seminar. Elaboration of essay on a pre-listed by topics from the field of media studies (the criteria for recognition of the work will be published in the organizational instructions on the Internet and discussed at a seminar), its delivery on time.
