Course objectives
The students acquire the basic knowledge on the problems of vocabulary formation, its development, enrichment and changes. At the end of the course, they should be able: to analyse the structure of a word and to understand and explain the word-frormation processes used in French; to explain the denotative and associative meaning of words and to make reasoned decisions about semantic relations holding between words in context.
Syllabus
  • 1. Sourses of vocabulary, historical development. 2. Doublets, loan-words, anglicisms and their French equivalents. 3. Word formation: derivation, composition, change of grammar category, abbreviations, acronyms. 4. Generalisation of proper names, geolexicology. 5. Phraseology.
