Course objectives
The course studies the literature for the young especially from the genre perspective. Students are encouraged to analyze their personal readings, and to come up with criteria for individual critical opinions.
Syllabus
  • 1. The publishing of magazines for children and youth. 2. Poetry for children and youth, popularity of so-called sung poetry, nonsense. 3. The relation of illustrations and text in children´s literature, renaissance of so-called bilderbuch in Czech literature. 4. The authorial tale and its varieties in the development of Czech literature. 5. The variety of prose with a child hero, frequent topics and types of characters. 6. Prose with a female child character, critical and theoretical perception of the genre. 7. Adventure literature and its genre diversification. 8. Folk literature and its place in children´s reading experience.

Teaching methods
Type of course: seminar. In their own mini-lectures students formulate and question their critical views of particular works from literature for children and young adults.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: written review of 2 pages of any book for children and youth published (first edition) in the last 3 years. Students are aware of the fact that neither their work nor any part of it must be plagiarized.
