Course objectives
British literature from the beginnings till the end of the 18th century
1. Introductory Practicalities and work required. Mapping the territory of Old English Literature and Early Modern Literature, up to Eighteen Century.
2. Old English Period: Riddles. Beowulf. The Arthurian Legend. Excalibur. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
3. Geoffrey Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales; Robin Hood and the Widow's Sons.
4. Elizabethan Era: Drama and Sonnet. Elizabethan Theatre. Shakespearean Comedies.
5. Shakespeare and Tragedies. King Lear. Hamlet
6. The Seventeenth Century: The Metaphysics (John Donne)
7. Cromwelian Literature (Restoration lit.) and John Milton. Pamphlets; Jonathan Swift: A Modest Proposal.
8.The novel: Jonathan Swift, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, Fanny Burney.

Homework, written assignements (response papers), set reading 40%

Attendance 20%
PLEASE NOTE: Attendance (80%) is assumed. Satisfactory result on assignments plus regular attendance will determine the grade. The course is hands-on, based on activities rather than lecturing. You are expected to work both for and in the sessions. Unexcused excessive abscense affects your grade as well.
