Prerequisites
Students enrolling in the course are expected to achieve at least a good pre-intermediate level of English (= Level B1 of the CEFR). The pre-intermediate student (B1) understands the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters, can enter unprepared into conversation about familiar topics and connects ideas in a simple way. He or she can also provide information, take messages, give simple instructions and deal with less routine problems, e.g. complaints. Can describe events, experiences, hopes and ambitions; give reasons, explanations of plans and opinions.

Course objectives
The aim of this B2 level course is to consolidate language knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor's English language course (level B1), acquire additional key special needs education terminology and enhance academic skills within level B2 of the CEFR by means of up-to-date special needs education topics and issues (reading and listening comprehension; speaking; formal writing). In terms of academic skills, the focus is mainly on presentation skills and expressing specialist opinion in writing. Students will also be required to show their command of level B2 grammar.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to: understand spoken LSP texts at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR; understand written LSP texts at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR; produce a short essay on a topic related to special needs education; successfully participate in a spoken interaction dealing with SN issues at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR; give professional biographical information; use selected specialist terminology with natural and sophisticated control; show a good command of selected grammar structures at B1+ to B2 level of the CEFR.

  • Session 1: Course introduction. UNIT 1: Revising and developing key SNE terminology. Test practice. Preparation for session 2: Texts 1, 2 + reading comprehension sheets 1 and 2. Session 2: UNIT 2: Sensory impairments: Visual impairment. Hearing impairment. Test practice. Preparation for session 3: Texts 3, 4 + RCS 3 and 4. Session 3: UNIT 3: Speech and language impairment. Speech and language therapy. Test practice. Preparation for session 4: Texts 5, 6 + RCS 5 and 6. Session 4: UNIT 4: Behavioural disorders. Specific Learning Difficulties. Test practice. Preparation for session 5: Preparing a 5-minute presentation about students' academic interests and/or professional career (including future plans): training the oral part of the exam. Session 5: UNIT 5: Autism spectrum disorders. Intellectual impairment. Test practice. Oral exam practice.

Teaching methods
Seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (acitvities developing students' language skills plus grammar and vocabulary knowledge at level B2: independent reading, listening and writing tasks; class discussions and presentations; grammar and vocabulary exercises; on-line quizzes for practising grammar and vocabulary, etc.).
Assessment methods
Level B2 language course. Credit requirements: 1) Attendance and active participation in the sessions (one absence due to serious reasons is acceptable). 2) Completed in-term tasks (assigned readings + submitted reading comprehension sheets, grammar exercises, mini-presentations, etc.) 3) Meeting deadlines. 4) Final exam: A) Written test + SNE terminology: listening (14 marks), reading (12 marks), use of English (20 marks), writing (14 marks), terminology (10 marks). Total: 70 marks. Pass mark: 65%. B) Oral part comprising 1) monologue (introducing student's specialisation/focus within SNE) - 1 minute + 2) spoken interaction between two students on a topic relating to SNE - 6 minutes. Total: 30 marks; PASS MARK = 65 %. Students who have not met requirements 1) – 3) are not allowed to sit the written part of the exam. Only those students who have passed the written part can take the oral part of the exam. Student, který nesplní požadavky 1) až 3) nemůže skládat zkoušku z tohoto předmětu, resp. její písemnou část. Ústní část zkoušky mohou absolvovat výhradně ti studenti, kteří úspěšně absolvují její písemnou část.
