It is presupposed that the student has passed the examination of Contemporary Czech Language II - morphology.

Course objectives
The students win a basic competence in the syntax of contemporary Czech language syntax.
(a) the ability to explain syntactical terms;
(b) the ability to use theoretical knowledge when analysing the sentence, complex and compound sentence;
(c) using the ability of sentential analysis when teaching in the primary school.
Learning outcomes
In the end of the course students:
(a) know and are able to explain the terminology of the analytic syntax and valence syntax;
(b) are able to explain the semantics and communicative function of the sentencial utterance in context;
(c) master analysis of the sentence, complex sentence and compound sentence, are able to interprete the sentential constituents and relationships among them;
(d) are able to analyse compound sentences and complex sentences ant to draw the graphs depicting their structures;
(e) are able to compare various graphs of the sentences.
Syllabus
  • 1. Modality of the sentence. Indicative, interrogative, imperative and optative sentence. Types of questions.
  • 2. Negation in the syntax. Sentence with negation and sentence without negation. Word-order.
  • 3. Non-subjective sentences. Equivalent of the sentence.
  • 4. Elements of the sentence.
  • 5. Syntactical relations (coordination, determination, predication), their expression. Determination - congruence, governance, association/adjunction.
  • 6. Sentence analysis. Graphical scheme of the structure of sentence. Valence.
  • 7. Sentence, complex sentence and compound sentence. Compound sentence. Co-ordination and expression of the coordinative relationships.
  • 8. Complex sentence. Sub-ordination. Types of clauses.
  • 9. Compound sentence with the complicated structure (with co-ordination and sub-ordination). Complex sentence with the complicated structure. Punctuation in the sentence, in the compound sentence and in the complex sentence. Graphical scheme of the compound sentence and of complex sentence.
  • 10. Direct speech and indirect speech in the written texts. Punctuation.

Ending: Written examination

The written examination includes 80-100 elementary syntactical phenomena. To get at least mark "E" student has to answer 75 % of the elementary questions correctly.
