Course objectives
The course reminds the teachers of methods of solving mathematical tasks with the tools of students 11 to 15 years old.
Syllabus
  • 1. Mathematical task and its solution with the means available to an elementary school pupil. Mathematics textbooks for elementary schools - sample tasks. Alternative approaches to teaching mathematics and problem solving. Simple and complex word problems, methodology for solving them. 2. Solving numerical and word problems arithmetically in the domain of natural and rational numbers, especially complex word problems. Calculations with powers and roots. 3. Using inductive and deductive methods when solving tasks in divisibility and elementary number theory. 4. Solving application tasks with percentages. Tasks for developing financial literacy of the pupils. 5. Didactic problems with treatment of algebraic expressions. Algebraic fractions. Proofs of some algebraic identities. Word problems solved with equations and systems of equations. 6. Solving word problems and application tasks using functions and their graphs. Statistical observations, concrete illustration of notions in statistics.
