- Course objectives
- Bilingualism is a complex phenomenon, which can be analysed and described from many different perspectives. The aim of the course is to provide a first insight into the different fields of contemporary bilingualism research. It aims at creating awareness that “bilingualism” is not limited to the typical case of mixed couples of the upper classes (as is often assumed) but a widespread phenomenon of different degrees and qualities. With respect to social bilingualism, students are lead to understand the interconnection between language use and the organisation of society.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- define what bilingualism really is,
- explain under which bilingualism arises and is maintained,
- assign different cases of bilingualism to the appropriate categories,
- estimate the consequences of bilingualism for the corresponding individual and society. - Syllabus
