Course objectives
The aim of the course is to investigate various possibilites of using popular songs in a secondary school classroom. At the end of this course, students should be able to design lesson plans based on songs.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to design their own lesson planes based on using music in a language classroom.
Syllabus
  • The subject makes it possible for the students to learn how to use music in an English Classroom. During the seminars, students are going to practice all the presented activities. In the 2nd part of the semester they are going to present their own activities, including teacher and peer feedback. The goal of the subject is to acquaint the students with how to use music in an English classroom, teach them to provide constructive criticism, choose suitable music for teaching, acquire a wide range of techniques of using music in the classroom, present a musical piece as a possible cornerstone of the lesson and try out useful or adaptable activities that the students can use in their own teaching. Contents: There are weekly seminars. In the first part of the semester there are presentations, the students are actively involved in the second part of it. The topics are: Using music to get to know one another; Basic techniques of using music to teach English: Gap Filling; Basic techniques of using music to teach English: Jumbled Lyrics; Basic techniques of using music to teach English: Changed Lyrics; Basic techniques of using music to teach English: New Lyrics; Using Instrumental Music, Music and Stories, Music and Personalizing ; Student presentations in the second part of the semester; Feedback time. Expected Outcomes: Each student will create an activity that can be used in an English Classroom, present it in the form of peer teaching, based on teacher and student feedback received, s/he will consider possible changes for future use and place the final version of the lesson plan in the e-learning support environment.

Teaching methods
The course is practice based. The participants will be encouraged to try all the activities out.
Assessment methods
A seminar paper (a design of a music-based activity - lesson plan) is required by the end of the semester, as well as its presentation - peer teaching - in the classroom, followed by feedback. The paper is to be uploaded into the mood-link-a, commented on by all course participants and discussed with the teacher. Please note that you should be in the 5th semester of your studies if you want to participate. Attendance is compulsory (exceptions may be granted for emergencies only).
