Course objectives
The main aim of the subject is to develop students' intercultural, socio-cultural and discourse skills. Students acquire new knowledge about a social phenomenon of their choice in German-speaking countries from a historical, cultural-political, sociological, psychological or philosophical perspective (e.g. religious tolerance, gender freedom, homosexuality, etc.).
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- be aware of the responsibilities of teaching cultural content in foreign language education;
- discursively communicate cultural phenomena;
- apply the knowledge gained about  different approaches to cultural studies in foreign language teaching in their own lesson plans or in school practice;
- apply intercultural and sociocultural learning in German as a foreign language classes;
- reflect on social phenomena in German-speaking countries from historical, cultural-political, sociological, psychological and philosophical perspectives.
Syllabus
  • 1. definition of course objectives and course completion requirements; theoretical introduction to cultural studies; proposal of specific topics for coursework;
  • 2. historical overview of the topic and choice of perspective for own work on the topic (history, political science, sociology, psychology); resources and tips for research are offered
  • 3. introduction to discursive regional studies and "discursive Landeskunde"
  • 4. critical examination of already didacticised material
  • 5. introduction of the topic from the perspective of the different approaches; subsequent discussion
  • 6. reflection, self-assessment of students

Náhradní absolvování
Students on a study abroad program will have their ISP (Individual Study Plan) recognized, and they will be allowed to fulfill the requirements (after agreement with the instructors at the beginning of each semester) through distance learning. Possible recognition of the course (for a course at the host university) should be discussed with the lecturer before the start of the semester.
