Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to present an outline of the development of the Czech literature between the years 1918 and 1945. The main emphasis is put on the problematic nature of individual literary genres, key personalities, movements and groups, as well as the social context. Students will use and enhance their knowledge of literary trends and movements in Czech literature in the given period and relate it to the specific nature of their poetics.

  • 1.General characteristics of the years 1918-1938. 2. Literature about the First World War. 3. Poetry between the two wars. 4. Prose between the two wars. 5. Drama between the two wars. 6. Theatre between the two wars. 7. Literary criticism and periodicals between the two wars. 8. Literature in the Czech lands written in german. 9. General characteristics of the years 1938-1945. 10. Poetry in the period of the German occupation. 11. Prose in the period of the German occupation. 12. Drama in the period of the German occupation. 13. Theatre in the period of the German occupation. 14. Literary criticism and periodicals during the Nazi occupation.

Teaching methods
Students will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities in the literary process of the given period. They will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more effectively. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of completion: credit. Credit requirements: Students are assessed for the active participation and attendance (students can be three times absent), and for tasks they complete individually (e.g. analyses and interpretations of selected pieces of literature). The emphasis is put on students´ability to evaluate a work and compare it in the context of contemporary Czech and world literature, and defend their views using precise terminology.
