Course objectives
The aim of the course is to overview the current knowledge in the field of theory of the first and second language acquisition in a natural environment and in class.
Syllabus
  • Theory of foreign language acquisition is a core subject of the didactic section and is the basis for a further choice of optional courses in this section. The aim of the course is to overview the current knowledge in the field of theory of the first and second language acquisition in a natural environment and in a school class. Students will learn about individual hypotheses and theories of foreign language acquisition and about the role of important factors which influence these processes. They will discuss implications of the theories of foreign language acquisition for educational practice and possibilities of research in the given field from a linguo-didactic point of view. Topics to cover: • Behaviorism, nativism, constructivism, social interactionism, connectionism, theory of information processing. • Billingual language acquisition. • Critical period. • Factors which influence foreign language acquisition.

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: students critically evaluate at least two foreign studies related in their theme to the field of theory or research of second language acquisition. Debate.
