Course objectives
The course concentrates on students´deeper understanding of environmental education methods and principles and on the motivation to their adoption and application in practice. The aim of the course is to provide deeper understanding of two basic approaches in the field of Environmental education. Presented topics and practical examples of the aproaches in EE show the possibilities how to teach about nature, culture and man in the context of new culture of learning and teaching. The course focuses on the environmental aspects in the educational content (curriculum), examples of proven approaches to environmental education especially learning through contact with nature; research-oriented teaching; work with natural materials; art techniques; observation of natural processes; learning through stories etc.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student should be able to: describe and explain these approaches by using specific examples; use and understand basic professional terminology; applicate this terminology during the process of description, analysis, interpretation and assessment of activities for pupils. Practicaly use chosen approach and (self)reflect it in the study group.
Syllabus
  • The miracles in nature (greenhouse effect, photosynthesis, decomposition, bioclimatization and ekosystem). Summary of basic ecological concepts and environmental contexts including didactic recommendations for teaching following subjects: Introducton to Ecology, Environmentalistisc, Global problems of environment and the principles of sustainable development. Overwiev and practical examples of proven approaches to EE: Learning by contact with nature (research-oriented teaching, learning in the garden, work with natural materials, art techniques, observation of natural processes). Lerning through stories (story-telling, econarratology, stories about the history of a specific landscape, real stories: DDT - Silent spring, energetically independent village Kněžice etc.), usage of methodical publications (Fairytale garden, Green island, Meadow nursery, Fountains etc.). Students´practical examples of activating methods usable in EE. Practical examples of activating methods usable in EE – presentation of the results of students´work.

Discussion, simulation games, group work, practical exercises
Assessment methods
Final discussion - a seminar extended essay of 1-3 pages submitted both in the electronic form and a hard copy to the teacher at a date agreed - a presentation of a seminar task with an outline in the student’s own words of about max. 15 minutes of length.
