Course objectives
The course aims to:
consolidate and enhance the knowledge of devices characteristic of the English style of science;
practise the ability to formulate an argument, to discuss, to use relevant sources critically and to draw conclusions;
It will teach students how to:
select, describe and apply appropriate research methods and procedures;
utilise academic skills such as classifying, analysis and synthesis, comparison, summarising, generalisation;
improve work with sources (use of quotations and paraphrases, making reference) and visual devices.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
use the linguistic devices characteristic of the style of science adequately;
distinguish and choose relevant research methods and procedures, describe them and use them in their own work;
know the lexical and syntactic means related to analysis, comparison, classification, quantification, summary, conclusion, etc.;
write a formally appropriate academic text on one of the topics related to the courses in the Master´s programme (including an abstract, a list of references and visuals);
transfer the knowledge into teaching writing in English lessons and work with relevant academic genres.
Syllabus
  • 1. Academic writing - context, conventions, approaches. The genre of diploma thesis.
  • 2. Writing Introductions. General-specific openings and the thesis statements
  • 3. Writing the Thesis statement. Personal vs. impersonal stance.
  • 4. Writing the Literature review. Citing sources.
  • 5. Coherent information flow - topic development.
  • 6. The cause-effect pattern. Coherent information flow - connectors.
  • 7. Presenting arguments, reporting results and findings.
  • 8. Stance in academic discourse.
  • 9. Writing the Conclusions.
  • 10. Writing the Summary.

explanation and discussion in seminars;
observation of selected phenomena during teaching practice;
home study and practice.
Assessment methods
Completion prerequisites:
- attendance: minimum 80%;
- active participation in seminars;
- seminar essay: a piece of academic text, due on May 27, 2019. Pass mark: 70%.
