Prerequisites
The course inducts students into scientific thinking that is essential for successful designing, implementing and evaluating of a linguistic research. The course requirement is an ability to apply basic knowledge of methodology of a linguistic research that students acquired within their Master's studies.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to mediate the core of a scientific theory to students and to activate their scientific thinking. Students are able to think critically about possibilities of research theories, approaches and methods in linguistics. They are able to formulate a research problem and a research aim. They use methodological research tools and procedures actively and they are able to use them effectively while solving the particular issue. They are able to interpret the ascertained linguistic phenomena and to analyse mentally with the aim to summarize research conclusions. Students are able to apply acquired knowledge and abilities when creating quality expert texts and when presenting them.

  • 1. Science and human learning.
  • 2. Trends of social studies development.
  • 3. Interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity in science.
  • 4. Character and kinds of scientific work.
  • 5. Research as a way of implementation of scientific work. Kinds of a linguistic research.
  • 6. Methods of a linguistic research – observation and confrontation, analysis and synthesis, experiment, forming, analytical-comparative method, linguistic-geographical method, questionnaire method, mathematical-statistical methods and the like.
  • 7. Quantitative research.
  • 8. Possibilities of using methods and techniques of a quantitative research for investigation of linguistic data. Research results processing and interpreting.
  • 9. Ethic side of creation of scientific texts.
