Course objectives
The subject follows the Neglected Genres 1. It provides students with the opportunity to get acquainted with other genres standing on the periphery of professional and readership interest in the 20th century. It focuses on the description, analysis and interpretation of development tendencies and concrete important works of Czech literature in the given period in selected genre areas. After completing the course, the course participant will be able to analyze significant features of selected genres and the style of prominent authors and will develop all his literary knowledge and interpretive skills in order to communicate more effectively with the literary work.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course student: - can identify the genre specific;
- can characterize the development of literary genres in the Czech context;
- develops its interpretative abilities.

  • 1. Fiction thematising wildlife. 2. Legionary literature. 3. Science fiction. 4. Overview of other neglected genres (trivial literature, history of literary criticism and professional journals in the 20th century).

Teaching methods
In both of a seminar and a lecture form, students will get a deeper insight into literary trends and movements of Czech poetry and prose, as well as into the specific nature of their poetics. They will be able to identify and analyze the style of outstanding personalities of Czech poetry and prose, significant for the particular period. Students will further develop their literary knowledge and interpretational skills with the aim to communicate with a literary work more efficiently. They will creatively use their knowledge gained not only in contact classes but also in their individual study of recommended literature which they will be able to discuss regularly with their teacher.
Assessment methods
Type of course: seminar. Credit requirements: active participation in the seminars and consistent knowledge of topics covered in the seminars. Students will present results of their work in written form (seminar paper). They will develop their ability of critical thinking as well as their individual style. Student´s ability to evaluate a work, compare it in terms of contemporary Czech and world production will be emphasised, along with the ability to defend their views using specific terminology of the field.
