Course objectives
The course provides the necessary background knowledge required for an adequate linguistic analysis of errors appearing in texts written by foreign language learners. Students learn to identify the source of the respective errors, use errors for assessing the level of competence of the learner and to choose the appropriate methods for marking and correcting errors of different types.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students should be able
- to classify errors according to linguistic criteria,
- to choose appropriate symbols for correcting errors in texts,
- to make assessments on the developmental stage of the learner according to the errors appearing in his/her texts,
- to formulate his/her own approach to handling errors in foreign language teaching.
Syllabus
  • 1. Levels of the language system, the grammar and the lexicon: where errors can be located from a linguistic point of view;
  • 2. Objectives in marking and correcting errors;
  • 3. Theoretical approaches to errors in foreign language learning (contrastive hypotheses, interlanguage hypothesis, processability theory);
  • 4. Collecting and analysing errors from authentic texts;
  • 5. “Intelligent errors” as indicators of developmental stages in foreign language learning;
  • 6. Errors as measures for proficiency levels according to the CEFR;

Teaching methods
Seminar including discussions of concrete cases based on the required reading (cf. literature).
Assessment methods
The course can be completed either by a “credit“ or by a “colloquium” (cf. Study and Examination Rules, section 18 and 19). In order to acquire a “credit”, students have to hand in the compulsory homework and to regularly attend class (no more than three absences). In order to acquire the “colloquium”, students in addition, have to hand in a seminar paper analysing errors in an authentic text (preferably gained from pupils during internship at a Czech elementary school).
Náhradní absolvování
Students who stay abroad during the teaching period (e.g., while participating in the ERASMUS program) will be granted full recognition of an equivalent course chosen from the program of the receiving university. Alternatively, students may work through the material on their own and hand in alle compulsory assignments (homework vaults in the IS), write a seminar paper (while consulting the teacher), respectively.

To support students enrolled in the combined study program in their self guided learning and their reflexion of the achieved learning outcomes, necessary feedback will be provided during the meetings (according to the timetable of the semester) and through written comments on the compulsory assignments. Students should feel free to contact the teacher via e-mail.
