Course objectives
The primary aim of the course is to make the students familiar with the basic methodology and approaches to historical buildings and with the survey of historic buildings, its significance and results for urbanism and historical constructions and the form of buildings, mainly from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- describe the key issues of the current state of implementation of the survey of historic buildings (castles, manor houses, urban houses, churches, monasteries and many others) in the Czech Republic
- describe individual types and characteristics of structures and buildings
- classify and use different types of sources (written, cartographic, iconographic, archaeological) to understand the history of buildings
- describe and suggest a methodology for documentation of development of historic buildings
- propose a suitable method of survey for a historic building
Syllabus
  • 1. introduction to the study of historic buildings, history of research and Act on the Protection of Cultural Monuments
  • 2. the applied type of documentation of historic buildings
  • 3. building material: stone, brick, wood, clay, lime, sand, straw, grass and their use - in time
  • 4. types of structures (masonry, brickwork) and chronology
  • 5. construction of stone and brick walls
  • 6. carpentry
  • 7. construction of trusses
  • 8. plaster, roofing
  • 9. church buildings
  • 10. residential areas: palaces, urban houses
  • 11. fortifications and fortified settlements (castles, fortresses, town walls) and individual elements
