Course objectives
The course focuses on key dramatic works of 1660-1737, ranging from the early Restoration attempts at "modern", fashionable drama, through mature Restoration comedy, comedy of manners, political and popular drama of the 1720s and 1730s. Authors to be discussed in detail: William Wycherley, George Etherege, Aphra Behn, Thomas Otway, William Congreve, George Farquhar and John Gay. In two sessions, we will look at modern renderings of Restoration plays, namely Timberlake Wertenbaker Our Country's Good (1988) and Václav Havel's Žebrácká opera (1972).

Teaching methods
Five seminar sessions; independent reading

In-class discussion of materials read at home; writing short response papers (one per each class); final essay.
