Course objectives
The content of this course is papal, imperial and private diplomatics in the broadest sense of the word during the Middle Ages; as part of private diplomatics there will be an examination of Czech imperial, religious, aristocratic and urban Mediaeval diplomatics. Emphasis will be placed on despatched as well as internal documents (systematic diplomatics), an analysis of external and internal signs (analytic diplomatics), as well as on understanding the process of the emergence of charters and other documents in chanceries in the wider context of the history of administration, Mediaeval society and culture (genetic diplomatics).
Learning outcomes
STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE THE COURSE WILL BE ABLE TO:- explain the differences between individual types of papal and imperial charters, as well as the charters and other documents from Czech kings and bishops, - typologically classify and describe the most important examples of internal documents including official books (concept, papal register, imperial register, Czech royal register, the special register of Prague archbishops and Olomouc bishops, provincial records, land registers, town registers, collections of forms), - describe the outer and inner signs of charters, - understand the main periods of development in Mediaeval chanceries, how they operated and how documents emerged, - use this information when working with Mediaeval documents in the archives.

  • 12) Czech aristocratic diplomatics in the Middle Ages;
  • 13) Czech urban diplomatics in the Middle Ages

Teaching methods
Teaching consists of two hours of lectures and a one-hour seminar where there will be a discussion on document excerpts presented in an authentic form.
Assessment methods
During the oral exam, students will be presented with excerpts from three documents from papal, imperial and Czech Medieval diplomatics. Students will briefly describe these excerpts and arrange them chronologically and typologically. The subsequent theoretical questions on papal, imperial and Czech diplomatics will be based on these previous excerpts.
