Abstract
The first part of the two-semester cycle, in which an advanced knowledge of Lithuanian language is assumed. The aim of this course is to deepen their knowledge of Lithuanian morphology and syntax. Students will become familiar with the system of nominal and verbal derivation, with the creation and usage of more complex syntactic structures, such as participles, transgressives and gerunds. They will also be introduced to work with a morphologically and syntactically annotated corpus of Lithuanian.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to:
- describe the word-formation in Lithuanian;
- describe complex syntactic structures of Lithuanian;
- to become familiar with corpus linguistics;
- handle basic work with Lithuanian corpora.

  • - morphological structure of a word (root, stem, suffix, ending, ...)
  • - morphological and functional (syntactic) word formation
  • - morphonological phenomena in word formation (self-study)
  • - word formation of nouns and verbs (derivation, composition, lexical borrowings)

  • - basic syntactic relations (short repetition)
  • - personal and impersonal sentences
  • - simple sentences and compound sentences
  • - syntactic functions of participles, transgressives and gerunds

  • - introduction to corpus linguistics, basic concepts and terminology
  • - possibilities and examples of corpus analysis
  • - introduction to morphologically annotated corpora of Lithuanian (DLKT, MATAS)

Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
Lectures, individual reading, discussions.
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
Work at seminars, individual reading, active participation in discussions on different texts. A final assessment is 1) a paper, in which a student presents the content of a chosen linguistic article related to one of the discussed topics, or 2) a paper, in which a student presents his/her own research, processed using corpus data in connection with one of the topics discussed.
