Course objectives

Course description. The relationship between the two sciences is presented from the point of view of literary science, i.e. how is literary science connected with the problems aesthetics is dealing with, what can aesthetics provide literary science with, how can more general statesments of aesthetics help in more particular problems literary science is trying to solve. In the lecture there will also be mentioned basic terms of aesthetics and literary science and specifics of artistic communication.

Learning outcomes

The students after finishing the course should be able:
to become familiar with primary and secondary literary theoretical and aesthetic sources connected to the subject;
to develop a basic set of concepts anchored in elementary conceptions of ancient philosophy and aesthetics
to formulate and interpret literary critical concepts and strategies in a wider context of history, sociology, linguistics, psychology and aesthetics
to adopt literary critical concepts and approaches to be applied to particular literary critical and artistic texts.

Syllabus

• 1. Aesthetics - temptation and challenge. 2. Attempts to define aesthetics. 3. The main theses and contradictions of European aesthetic thinking in the works of Plato, Aristotle and Kant. 4. The symbiosis of aesthetics and philosophy. 5. Mimesis and poiesis. 6. Realism and reality; truth and semblance; the plurality world - reference; semantics of possible worlds. 7. Aesthetic reference and aesthetic attitude. 8. Possible ways of reading.

Seminar is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge.

Assessment methods

In order to be given the credit the students must show their knowledge of the topic during a short oral interview.
