Course objectives
The course introduces students to the basics of phonetics and phonology. Students should be able to use the basic concepts when analyzing Czech data.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is able to:
- use IPA alphabet;
- classify vocalic and consonantal sounds in Czech according to their phonetic features;
- formalize distribution of sounds;
- work with phonological features;
- understand the distinction between underlying and surface phonological structures;
formulate and encode basic phonological processes of Czech;
- formulate basic principles of syllabification and define basic syllable types.
