Course objectives
The lecture is focused on deeper knowledge of proper nouns. After the introduction, providing a theoretical basis for better understanding the presented topics, attention will be paid to elementary kinds of proper nouns (anthroponyms, toponyms, chrematonyms) and then to their types, i.e. to first names, surnames, nicknames, hypocoristics etc. (= anthroponyms), to place names, minor place names, names of streets etc. (= toponyms), to proper names of products, to names of social institutions, social phenomena tec. (= chrematonyms), mostly on the material of names occurring in the Czech Republic. All kinds of names will be presented as results of the previous development. Attention will also be paid to literary onomastics and to use of proper nouns in phraseology.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students will be able:
- to get orientated in elementary issues of onomastic theory;
- to characterize the individual kinds and types of proper nouns within the kinds;
- to outline briefly their development; to get orientated in scholarly sources.
