Course objectives
The aim of this course is to offer a general overview of the most important literary works of the second half of the 20th century. Meant as a complement to the course "Czech literature in the 2nd half of the 20th century", it shall give to the students a more complex view.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able to:
- interpret literary text and place it in the context of the work of a given author or artistic movement/period;
- formulate his/her own reading experience;
- argue his/her own opinion in the point of meaning and value of literary work;
- create his/her own system of notes about books.

  • 4. 3. – in captivity of schematism (Káňa: Parta brusiče Karhana; Kainar: Český sen)
  • 11. 3. – the golden sixties (Kundera: Směšné lásky)
  • 18. 3. – normalization calm (Páral: Radost až do rána)
  • 25. 3. – the revolt (Jirous: Magorovy labutí písně)
  • 8. 4. – the downfall of the regime (Viewegh: Báječná léta pod psa)
  • 15. 4. – reading week
  • 22. 4. – a bit of revisionism (Katalpa: Němci)
  • 29. 4. – an introduction to comics (Rudiš/Švejdík: Alois Nebel)

Teaching methods
Homework, reading, analysis, interpretation, discussion.
Assessment methods
Preparation for the seminar (interpretation questions), active work in lessons and attendance (maximum 2 absences), elaboration of at least nine short reflections (600–1800 characters / reflection) always before a specific seminar and participation in the final mass colloquium.
