Course objectives
The seminar is dealing with modern Czech theatre history, esp. with so-called normalisation. The seminar also focuses on analysis of director's personality in variable contexts (individual development, local historical contexts etc.).
It is intensive seminar based on secondary literary sources and archival materials. The course is always focused on one chosen director.

Profiled seminar intended for second year students.
The seminar is held in Czech.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the seminar student will be able to:
- do reconstruction of theatre performance in it's historical context;
- name changes of directing style on a specific example;
- work with directors' estates;
- work with directors' and stage managers' books/notes;
- understand style changes of modern directing.
Syllabus
  • Introduction (who is the particular director, what might be interesting?)
  • Czech directing after 1945 - general orientation (trends, persons etc.)
  • First contextual mapping
  • Presentation of assigned papers (contemporaries, development of particular theatre, paralel theatre activities in given city and other theatre centres)
  • Reconstruction of selected performances
