Course objectives
The course provides students with an inside into the genres of ancient historiography from the Mediterranean area (Egypt, Near East, Greece, Roman Empire) as well as with an overview of ancient historians and their works.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will get acquainted with ancient historiography of the Mediterranean space.
They will also get acquainted with different genres of ancient historiography, prominent historians and their writings.

  • 1. Writing history in ancient Egypt and Near East.
  • 2. Greek historiography of the Classical period.
  • 3. Greek historiography of the Hellenistic period.
  • 4. Greek historians of Rome.
  • 5. Origins of Roman historiography.
  • 6. The annalistic and biographic tradition of the Roman republic, late republic historiography.
  • 7. Historiography of the principat period I.
  • 8. Historiography of the principat period II.
  • 9. Historiography in the Age of Constantin I, Church history.
  • 10. The development of Greek historiography.
  • 11. Latin historiography: Jerome, Orosius and western chroniclers.
  • 12. Latin historiography and the barbarian kingdoms, historiography of the East.
